Former California Congressman TJ Cox Indicted on 28 Charges, Hires Prominent Attorney Mark Coleman
About the case
Prominent attorney Mark Coleman is representing former California congressman TJ Cox, who has been indicted on 28 charges, including 15 counts of wire fraud, one count of campaign contribution fraud, 11 counts of money laundering, and one count of financial institution fraud. The indictment alleges that Cox schemed to fund and reimburse people close to him for donations to his campaign and that he diverted $1.7 million from companies he was affiliated with and their clients into unauthorized bank accounts he created between 2013 and 2018. Cox also allegedly submitted fabricated bank statements to a lender in order to receive mortgage loan money and bought a property that he claimed would be his primary residence, but instead rented it to someone else.
If convicted of wire fraud and money laundering, Cox could face 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Coleman told The Washington Post that Cox pleaded not guilty and plans to "mount a rigorous defense." Cox's next hearing is set for October 12.
